Supermarkets in the UK are now stocking “growing-up” milk, which comes in either powder or reconstituted form. It is also sold in other countries (for example, the US, France and Belgium), where it is known as “milk of growth”. It is marketed as being suitable for babies aged from 10 months to three years old, containing vitamins and higher levels of iron than other formula milks.
There are some advantages to using these milks. Some varieties are flavoured with vanilla, so children who dislike the taste of cow’s milk may prefer them. They have added vitamins, so if you are unsure as to whether your child is receiving enough vitamins from his solid food, you can be reassured that he will be receiving a top-up in his milk. In the ready-made form, growing-up milk does not require refrigeration and could therefore be useful when travelling or on holiday.
However, there are several disadvantages to growing-up milk. It is very expensive in the ready-made form – about three times the cost of cow’s milk. But if you use the powder, you have the inconvenience of mixing up feeds. It may also be difficult for a child who has grown used to the taste of vanilla-flavoured milk to suddenly switch to cow’s milk.
There is no reliable research evidence to show that growing-up milk has any advantage over cow’s milk, except for children who are known to eat a poor diet of solid food. Although the levels of iron are higher than in cow’s milk, research has shown that only a small percentage of that iron can be absorbed by a baby anyway. In fact, iron is more readily absorbed from solid food.
The Department of Health says that breastmilk or formula milk is the right milk for babies up to the age of 12 months. After that time, cow’s milk may be given as a drink. By the age of 10 months your baby will be gaining a large part of his nourishment from solid foods, which should be rich in iron and vitamins, but if you are in any doubt as to the vitamin content of his food, then daily vitamin drops are recommended.
If you are concerned that your child may not be having a balanced diet or that he may have iron-deficiency anaemia, and you are tempted to give growing-up milk a try, I would suggest first discussing it with your health visitor. She will be able to suggest ways of enriching the solids part of his diet.
For the majority of children, growing-up milk is unlikely to give them anything which they will not be getting from a varied diet of solids with drinks of cow’s milk.

begitulah seadanya
to provide your kids growing up milk or not is your choice.
bagi saya..saya lebih prefer susu yang biasa biasa tu
ikut selera anak saya saja..tiada paksaan dalam menentukan seleranya
berikan ruang untuk anak kita membuat pilihan
