Is my baby rejecting breastfeeding because he’s sick?

If there’s something wrong with your baby’s health, he may reject your breast because nursing causes him pain or discomfort. Look for signs of the following:

• Cold: If your baby has a stuffed nose, he can’t breathe and nurse at the same time. Use a vaporizer to clear your baby’s nose.
• Earache: Ear pain can move into the jaw, causing discomfort when he sucks.
• Thrush: This fungal infection can appear in your baby’s mouth, making nursing painful. If there are white patches on the inside of your baby’s lips and cheeks that don’t wipe away easily, get your baby’s infection treated before it spreads to your nipples.
• Teething: Swollen gums make nursing painful.

Can my milk flow affect my baby’s interest in nursing?

Some babies reject breasts simply because they’re impatient. If your milk takes a while to flow to the nipple, your baby may get frustrated. Try expressing a little milk before you start feeding him.

Could my diet or stress level affect my baby’s interest in nursing?

Because your baby’s nourishment comes directly from your body, any changes in it can affect his dinner!

Your baby could be reacting to one of the following:

• Diet: If you eat dishes with a lot of garlic or strong flavours, the taste of your milk could be affected. Try to avoid spicy or strong foods and see if your baby returns to breastfeeding.
• Hormones: If you’re pregnant again or if your menstrual cycle’s returned, your body is probably going through a hormonal shift, which can change the taste of your milk.
• Stress: If you’re feeling tense, your baby’s probably sensing it and it’s making him upset.

Can I return to breastfeeding after my milk has dried up?

Like encouraging a regular breastfeeder to return to eating, it can be tricky introducing your baby and adjusting your body to the process. Be patient with your new feeding routine and:

• Use a breast pump. To initiate lactation after your supply has dried up, use a breast pump for extra stimulation. If you don’t have access to one, use your hand. By massaging your breasts, you’ll help promote milk production.
• Take hot showers. The direct pressure of hot water on your breasts can increase milk production.
• Avoid tight-fitting bras. They inhibit your breasts from expressing milk.
• Rest. If you feel tense and tired, it’ll be harder for you to produce milk.
• Give yourself time. It’s going to take your body a little while to adjust.

After you begin to produce milk again, you’ll have to put effort into helping your baby adjust. Have patience; you’ll find the results well worth it.

Whether you’re introducing your baby to breastfeeding for the first time or encouraging a once-normal habit, listen to him! If adjusting your personal habits and monitoring his health don’t change his rejection of breastfeeding, talk to your pediatrician.
